"Hula is the language of the heart and therefore the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people." -David (Kawika) La' amea Kalakaua King of Hawai'i, 1874 to 1891 Hula is a way of expressing thought through mele (poetic words), arm and hand gestures and rhythmic movement. Hula is a reflection of life. Hula is a way of retelling history. The hula tradition teaches how to respect family, appreciate natural phenomena, memorize lengthy chants, love the land, understand hierarchy, recognize life and death cycles, and acknowledge and honor the presence of life. Hula has gone through many different stages. The portrayal of the dance was often misunderstood. It went through an era where it was forbidden and only danced in secret. Today, hula is more readily accepted in society and a resurgence of its cultural significance is being taught to new generations. Hula transports us from this world into one of harmony and balance.
